Loosduinen is a district of Moving company The Hague<\/a> and also a former Westland garden village that merged with the city of The Hague in 1923. From the early 1970s, a shopping center for the entire district was built on the site of the old center. Loosduinen has an area of 13 km\u00b2, more than 22,500 homes and 45,865 inhabitants (2015). The Loosduinen district includes the districts:<\/p>\n

The name Loosduinen comes from the name 'empty dunes'. The original village was located in a dune area that came inland through biological land reclamation. These deserts no longer played a role as a sea defense and were thus 'pty'.<\/p>\n

The nickname of the former inhabitants was 'Peenbuiker', perhaps because most peonies were grown in this horticultural area. The story goes that, because so many carrots were grown, the horticulturalists cleaned their carrots near the ditches in order to have nicer carrots than the competition and thus have the opportunity to sell more. In order to be able to wash the carrots, the fishermen lay on their bellies next to the ditches, so that their bellies were covered in mud. Hence the name peenbuiker.<\/p>\n

The title first appeared in 1186 when the later Count Dirk VII married Aleid van Kleef from the 'villa' Losdun. Like The Hague, the old village of Loosduinen originated on a bank, where at the end of the twelfth century a 'villa' (farm) was founded by Count Floris III. In those years it was called 'Losdun'. Floris IV, the same who started the construction of the Binnenhof, founded a Cistercian nunnery in Loosduinen around 1230, where the current abbey church, Willem-III-straat 40, is a remnant. After 1276 the village gained some status as a place of pilgrimage because of the 'miracle of Loosduinen': in that year Countess Margaretha van Henneberg is said to have given birth to 364 children.<\/p>\n

Administrative division
\nThe area of Loosduinen hardly formed a unit in history, whereby a distinction can be made between the village center of Loosduinen and the total area of Loosduinen. Administratively, half of this area was part of Haag-Ambacht. The other half formed a high estate called Half-Loosduinen, but that area was in turn divided into Monster, which was in charge of the government, Poeldijk and Terheijde. The princes of Orange were the craftsmen of the region. This situation came to an end at the end of the nineteenth century, after the Batavian Revolution, which brought with it many administrative reforms, including the abolition of the lordships. After the area of the former Netherlands was annexed to France by Emperor Napoleon in 1810, it was determined by imperial decree in 1811 that Loosduinen with Eikenduinen and Poeldijk, including Kwintsheul, could form an independent municipality of Loosduinen. Shortly afterwards, Prefect Goswin de Stassart appointed since the first maire (mayor) Franc van der Goes.
\nThe independence of the municipality of Loosduinen lasted until 1923 and was largely added to the municipality of The Hague, on the condition that a sewerage system was constructed. Poeldijk was separated from it, but from that moment on Eikenduinen was part of The Hague, which soon began to build many new homes for its growing population. The current Loosduinen district is considerably more compact than the original Loosduinen region and consists mainly of residential areas that were built on former garden plots in the past three decades. In addition, there is a large psychiatric hospital with a park-like design, Bloemendaal, consisting of villas and pavilions (Huis Oud-Rozenburg) built around an eighteenth-century country house.
