The first complex was built here between 1921 and 1923. This was called: Het Zomerhof. These are 'control houses'. Before 1938, people lived here (anti-social households) who were re-educated under supervision.
Het Zomerhof was demolished in 1963. As a replacement, 3 large flats and a school were built.

The Laak Canal was dug around the district in 1924. This functioned as a connection to the Laakhaven and the Loosduinsevaart.
In the year 32 of the 20th century, the wholesale market for fruit and vegetables moved from the Veenkade to the Laakkanaal. The site where the wholesalers were originally located was given a port and a railway line to the Hollands Spoor station. In the months and years that followed, homes and sports fields were built around the market.
In 1990, the fruit and vegetable market was moved again, this time to Leidschendam, after which apartments and single-family homes were built.
