Leyenburg is a district in the city The Hague.
The Haga Hospital is also located on the Leyeweg.
Leyenburg has a limited number of single-family homes and a large number of apartments. For this reason, the population in the area has aged more than elsewhere in The Hague. Leyenburg is a quiet neighborhood with stable residents.
Leyenburg was built on what was the former municipality of Loosduinen. In 1916, a small army barracks was built near the western border. The building has remained in its original state and now houses the police horses. Since 2009 it has become a municipal monumental building.
In 1923, Loosduinen was swallowed up by The Hague. After this, the Laakkanaal was dug as a connection between Laakhaven and Loosduinsevaart. This canal is the northern boundary of the district. By 1930 an expansion plan had been developed. Construction stalled in 1942 due to a scarcity of building materials. The expansion plan gained momentum again in the 1950s. In the sixties of the last century, high-rise buildings were built because the price of land had risen sharply and high-rise buildings could achieve a high population density. The hospital, called Leyenburg Hospital, was completed in 1971. The complex is 58 meters at its highest and has several lower buildings attached to the building. The hospital has been part of the HagaZiekenhuizen since 2004.
